Christoph Günther has secured his first victory of the 2012 season. After three rounds at the Augsburg Golf Club in Bobingen-Burgwalden, the 37-year-old from Oberammergau won with a total of 7 under par after three rounds and thus had a stroke ahead of Daniel Wünsche and Max Kramer. A German triple success, which brings Christoph Günther 5000 euros in prize money as well as further movement in the ranking: Now Wünsche is again in the lead ahead of Marcel Haremza, Kramer is third.
In the end, Christoph Günther dedicated his victory to the home pro of GC Augsburg, Steve Hampton. It was with him that Christoph Günther completed his training as a PGA golf professional from 1995 to 1998. The former mentor then encouraged him to try his hand as a tour player. Since then, Christoph Günther has won a number of professional tournaments, many on the EPD Tour, including a Challenge Tour victory. After returning to the old blade putter, which he once bought from the first golf instructor’s fee, the ball has been rolling into the hole on the green almost by itself for weeks. And while the opponents stumbled in the final round of the fourth-last tournament of the 2012 EPD Tour season, Christoph Günther held his game together and completed a “decent” 68 final round after initially 72 and 69 strokes. Good enough to relegate Max Kramer and Daniel Wünsche to second place, which they shared with 6 under par, strong enough to lift the winner’s trophy “a little unexpectedly” into the sky above Bobingen-Burgwalden. “I like it when it’s hot”, said Günther after three days at almost 40 degrees in almost no shade, “I am fit in terms of condition and can concentrate very well”.
The winner’s purse of 5,000 euros puts the champion in 13th place in the overall standings of the 2012 EPD Tour; but ambitions to intervene in the battle for the five qualifying places for the 2013 Challenge Tour have been exhausted three tournaments before the end of the season. “The subject is over for me. I simply enjoy it when I play well. Play well, that’s the motto for all those who are still hoping for a ticket for the Challenge Tour 2013. While Daniel Wünsche has once again taken the lead in the overall standings ahead of Marcel Haremza, and Max Kramer 3rd place from Frenchman Damien Perrier, a fierce competition for 5th place has broken out behind the top quartet. The Czech Marek Novy holds it after 17 tournaments, but his lead over Björn Stromsky from Ravenstein is only 59 Euros. So the excitement remains on the EPD Tour, where the next trophy can be won at the Hardenberg GolfResort Prize (26 to 28 August).
