Whenever German golf was mentioned, it meant for decades: Bernhard Langer. Twice Masters Champion, world number one, Ryder Cup winner as player, as captain – and above all, a unique consistency. 32 years, half a life, after his first victory on the European Tour, Langer is still playing for trophies.
His love of the sport, his professionalism and his healthy lifestyle help the old master in this. But the father of four is not an ascetic, as is sometimes claimed. But he loves to eat the Black Forest cake made according to his mother’s recipe.
Even though this time he is teeing off at Gut Lärchenhof, the Bayer Langer still has a home game. He may not come from the same area as Siem or Kaymer, but he knows the course better than most. He used to organise the German Masters here, which he won in 2001.
