Handle size
The correct grip size helps to hold the club securely at the top of the backswing. If the grip is too small, it can lead to too much “hand action” and the club face closes permanently, resulting in a pull or hook. If the grip is too large, the club face may be open at impact, resulting in a slice.
In my experience, almost 50% of golfers play incorrect grip sizes or even poor, worn grips. To find out the correct grip size, I recommend using the Lamkin grip size finder.
Grip material
Most grips today are made of synthetic material. Whether you choose a smooth, half-cord or full-cord grip is a matter of taste. Just try it out beforehand to see which material suits you best.
Handle change
Serious golfers actually change their grips every year at the start of the season. It is often underestimated how new grips affect the control of the clubs. Professionals, like me, change the grips on their clubs even more often. It just feels good and safer.
The importance of gloves and grips
Together with gloves and new grips, golf clubs feel fantastically safe. However, new gloves with worn grips will not help you much. You need both to ensure that you feel secure with your club and that it doesn’t slip out of your hand. In addition, many golfers hold their clubs far too tightly in their hands, especially if the grips are worn.
Grips and club types
I recommend that you use the same grip and grip size on all clubs, whether irons, wedges or woods. The exception to this is the putter. The same applies here – try out which grip suits me best. If you have different clubs from different manufacturers, which is the case for many players, then make sure you use the same grip and grip size on all your clubs.
New grips – better scores!
It depends on the condition of your grips of course, but many golfers never replace their grips, rather they buy a complete new set. You can’t tell me that worn out grips help you score well. I like to minimize the risk of the club spinning or slipping in my hand, which happens with old grips and destroys my score. With new grips I feel better and my swing is more relaxed.
